About Doom 2's Soundtrack
Overview
Like the first game, Doom 2's music was composed by Robert Prince[1]. However, doom2.wad arranges its data in a more complicated fashion. Unlike the original layout, which used a D_ExMy pattern that was easy to follow, doom2.wad names its Lumps after the title of the song and the number of times it's appeared in the game so far.
In other words, instead of looking for D_MAP01 to find the music for the first level, you need to know to look for D_RUNNIN. This unorthodox approach doesn't seem to have bothered WAD authors, but it's definitely not intuitive.
The Lump names for each song, their titles[2], their associated level code, and their SHA-256 hashes are found in the table below. The hashes are probably more important than the rest, as they'll be used to identify tracks in fan made WADs.
